Say Hello to....... My New Favourite Band!!!!!!!!!

A long time ago (less than a year) I used to keep a little list of cool songs I heard on AltTV, because there were a lot, a lot of bands you'd never heard of who fucking rocked. One day I saw the video for the song "Last Day of Magic" by a band called "The Kills". The song was great and the video was, too. They played this a lot and I never tired of it. Earlier this year, they started playing another song by them which was equally brilliant.

Then AltTV died :(

I started listening to The Kills (and other bands I missed from AltTV) on MySpace. It turned out The Kills had lots of good songs. And Praise God, Galaxy Records moved in very close to Real Groovy. So after looking through real groovy, feeling a little disappointed, I bopped over to Galaxy Records. It seemed they had every album I was looking for. Expensive, though, in my books, I decided that to get what I wanted I had fork out. I could go on buying Beatles records and Cat Stevens records from the Penny Lane $4 bins, but I was feeling increasingly empty with these. So, I bought the Kills album "Midnight Boom". It was $33 Fucking $$ AND it was a CD.

I got home and played it, despite my shitkicker CD player's occassional/frequent skipping. The album was goddamned genius, I loved it. And I listened to it over and over, then googled the kills. Reading/watching interviews and articles on the band I was amazed by all the things we shared. They started talking about Edie Sedgwick, who made her life a work of art, and Andy Warhol's Factory and The Velvet Underground. I was so hot for this band. THEN I found out that the title of the Cd "Midnight Boom" came from a line in a Jack Kerouac book. I creamed.

So there you go, my new favourite band, The Kills.

Last night I saw The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman. It's a film about a Swedish (it's in Swedish) knight returning from the crusades in the midst of the Black Death. He challenges Death to a game of chess, so he can put off dying until he sees his wife again. The film had been lurking about in my mental list of films I want to see. So when we went to Alice's this weekend, I headed straight for it, so as not to be distracted by another film that could jump out at me during the long journey and the battle of will power to get to the 100 Greatest Films on the far wall. I picked up the Dvd and flipped it over in my hand. It said on the back that it was only an hour and a half long, which laid all my fears of a big boring epic movie to rest. It would've been easier to pick up a nice, slick, colour, English language, slightly arty new release, but I persevered and reaped its benefits. The film was aesthetically beautiful, thought-provoking, and nonetheless entertaining. Also, being a revered film, having seen it opens up possibilities of intellectual discussion should I ever meet someone who has seen it. Despite being a very serious film, I laughed as much as I would have laughed at any Ben Stiller film, because the Swedish language often sounds like when you play English backwards.

I thought I'd get personal, but not too personal

It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

But is it better to never have loved at all than it is to put yourself out there, only to be blatantly rejected, and as a result can never find the courage to love again, and everyone knows about it, and you can never talk to them ever again, and you know they don't love you.
